Al,

I hope you can help me on a question regarding the family of Hiram Turner. I believe you are considered to be "the authority" on Carroll County and the family of Larkin Turner. I would have written off-line but your e-mail address is not given to allow that.

Hiram Turner is said to be the father of:

Levi John Wooden Turner born Aug 1835 and died in 1915 in TX.

Levi J. W. Turner is enumerated in 1870 in Carrollton District, Carroll Co. with wife Sarah C. (age 27 or 29) and three Turner children ages 3, 2, and 3 months plus some Paine children (ages 14 and 12) and two Pollard children (ages 13 and 10).

By 1880, he is in Rusk Co. TX and he does have a son named Hiram Turner.

He apparently served in the Civil War (probably in GA) and received a pension for his service (name given on that as Levy John Wooden Turner) as did his widow Sarah Catherine Turner (all in Texas while residing in Nacogdoches Co. TX).

I've seen several family trees listing Levy John Wooden Turner as the son of Hiram Turner and thus grandson of Larkin and Eleanor "Lea" Driskill Turner.

There is a boy named Levy age 15 living with Hiram Turner in 1850 in Carroll Co. GA. However, when I went back and looked at the 1840 Census, there were no male children in Hiram's household.

Thus, my quandry. Was Levy really Hiram's son?

I do hope you can give me some help on this question. Did Hiram leave any estate papers after he died that named his children? Did he perhaps take in this boy and raise him?

I believe there was also some question about the girl Sophronia living with Larkin in 1850--maybe an illegitimate child of a daughter of Larkin's (can't recall what the controversy was on her but am thinking there was some). Could this be the case on Levy also?
