HI Marlene, You see my ggggrandfahter was named James Mitchum and he was born in NC in either 1783 or 1794 (the census depicts his age as 56 in 1850 but 87 in 1870) We beleive they where missed on the counting of the 1860 census as they are nowhere to be found but other records indicate they where still in Shelby Co TX in the 1860 time frame. He came to Sabine Co TX before March 2 1836 then Shelby Co TX was formed from Sabine co and his land became part of Shelby. According to his Tx Land Grant he was single when he got his Tx land grants. He is listed as an original land owner in both counties becuase of this. I have been researching Mitchum's with ties to NC in hopes of one day learning the heritage of my James. For the last 10 years we knew nothing of any of his Mitchum relatives but this last week I got my hands on the 1845 Tax list of Shelby Co TX and there on that list with my James was a Man named John Mitchum. John is not on the 1850 census of Shelby nor is he buried anywhere in Shelby that I can find. (Cant find my James's grave either for that matter nor his wife)James married a woman named Eliza Amelia White who was born on 26 Sept 1816 to James Martin White and a cousin Martha "Patsy" White possibly in Elbert co GA (that is where James and Patsy married in 1807) Eliza had siblings Polly Wade, Ruben Ballenger, Jeremiah Franklin, Eppy Warren, Asa Jackson, John Daniel, and Patsey E White. Her brothers Reuben B and Jeremiah F White were in Shelby Co TX in 1850 as well. When my James got his land he signed his own name James Mitchum. The census and other records indicate Michum and of course various other spellings. then in 1872 Sabine co TX is Nathaniel Mitchum's grandson James Nathaniel (son of Murrell J Mitcham LC NC to Morgan Co GA)getting married. Where James Nathaniel lived in Sabine co TX is less than 5 miles from my James in Shelby Co TX. My grandmother Bertha Leora Michum Crockett was born in Athens Henderson co TX (Where Hezekiah Mitham's family son of Capt Richard B lived). Other Mitcham families seem to be all around me but no direct ties have been found. My James had children named William Daniel (My gggrandfather) Jeremiah James M (believed to be James Monroe or James Martin) Elviry A Susan Ann White (step daughter) (The only death cert I have been able to find is James's and it list no parents names as he was living with a unrelated family at the time of his death in Canton Van Zandt Co TX (Canton is about 20 miles from Athens Henderson Co TX) What really stinks is both Shelby and Sabine Co TX had court house fires with loss of almost all records before 1880. The Henry b abt 1804 (est only) Lincoln Co NC Alta and I are looking for is the son of Nathaniel Mitchum b 1780 d Apr 1838 LC NC He married in Carroll co GA on 11 Oct 1843 Elizabeth Crawford This is all we know about Henry except for this Henry was on the 1841 Tax list Carroll Co GA as was his brother Bartlett Crowder (listed as Bartley and Henry Micham) Excerpt from records of Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions, Catawba County, North Carolina, December 1843: (Caption of Case): JOSEPH STAMEY VS: NATHAN MICHAM LAWSON MICHAM LOGAN MICHAM BANKS MICHAM MURREL MICHAM JOHN MICHAM HENRY MICHAM AARON MICHAM JOSHUA MICHAM HEIRS HENRY JOHNSON and wife, SALLY DANIEL LYNN and wife, JAMIMA and NARCISSA MITCHEM, heirs-at-law of NATHANIEL MICHAM This tells me that Henry was alive in as late as Dec 1843 but what happened to him and his wife after this is a mystery the Henry that Michael and Alta have been searching for I believe is Henry Meachum who married Nancy SMith who moved from Wake Co NC henry went to Anson and Nathaniel to Lincoln (Now for the kicker) My James's son William named a son William Rufus Mitchum he was known as Willie (my ggrandfather) another son was named Henry Ollie Michum (my ggrandfather's brother) Jeremiah Mitchum of Anson Co NC named a son William Rufus Meachum sometimes Mitchum Henry H Meachum b 1766 and Nancy Smith had a son named Henry H Meachum Jr. Henry JR named a son Joshua B Joshua had a son named Daniel Junius/Daniel Johnson (He is listed as both) He named a son Henry Ollie Meachum Henry Ollie is a very unusual name and I have only seen it in mine and Henry's families I have other circumstantial evidence that ties my James to Anson Co NC as well I truly believe that my James's family may have come from Anson Co NC I just dont have the solid proof. Alta and I beleive that my James is probably somehow connected to either Henry or Nathaniel someway. I personally think he is the son of Henry H Meachum and Nancy Smith If you could help at all with the Henry who was in Carroll Co GA both Alta and I would be greatful We dont even know the parents for any siblings for his wife Elizabeth Crawford either.
