My great grandmother was Sallie (MILLER) HIGGINBOTHAM of Sugar Valley. The daughter of John J. MILLER & Evaline MALONE, Sallie was born 24 Jun 1858 in Sugar Valley and died there 16 Apr 1906. She is buried with her husband Lewis Sanford HIGGINBOTHAM and two of their children, Robert & Alma in the Sugar Valley Baptist Church Cemetery. Her parents as well as a brother, Clark Tombs MILLER & his wife Mattie, are also buried there. Sallie's grandfather was Doctor R. MALONE who died in Sugar Valley in 1861. Here is where in infomation gets tricky. According to Jewel B. Reeve, in "Climb the Hills of Gordon", pp. 189-190, Sallie's father John J. MILLER (1826-1873) married a daughter of D. R. & Cliestia MALONE. Though the daughter is not named, she is obivously the Evaline beside whom John is buried. Also mentioned by Reeve, is Judson MALONE (1835-1918), a son of D.R. & Cliestia. Judson is also called Y. J. by Reeve. While there is no census listing either Sallie or Judson with these parents, both John & Eveline MILLER & Doctor R. & Catherine A. MALONE are found in Sugar Valley as early as 1850. I assume Catherine was really Cliestia. I have read other researchers notes who state D.R.'s wife was Celestia A. WILLIAMS, but give her dates as 1818-1859. I believe the 1818 is too late. Reeve states her tombstone reads 1813-1859 which is more plausible if she is Evaline MILLER's mother. Other children of D.R. & Celestia were Mary A., James B., John H. H., Andrew F., Lydia C. or Lucretia C., Sarah, Octavia, Eugenia, Laura E. and Celestial A. That latter was born Nov 1859 was named for her mother who died in childbirth according to the 1860 Mortality Schedule. Additionally, Sallie's brother Y. J. (Young Judson) MALONE married an Octavia who was the same age as his sister by the same name. To make matters more confusing, the 1880 census lists D.R.'s daughters Laura & Celestial as Young J. MALONE's sisters-in-law. Now wouldn't they be his sisters if they had the same father. Or is it possible that the Octavia he married was herself his sister and the census makes reference to Laura & Celestial as her sisters thus his sisters-in-law.
