I am (likely) a descendent of James Gilleland born 8/1/1745 in PA. Most of my info comes from the web, so I can't vouch for the reliability of it. I wonder about the spelling. I can confirm that his grandsons (or alleged grandsons) Daniel and James as being spelled GillEland--I have seen Gilleland Creek (named after James) and it is spelled with the "E". Did James (b. 8/1/1745) change his spelling? Or was the "i" spelling a typo? I have often been curious about when the spelling was changed from i to e or vice-versa. Thanks, Eric |
