Born at Wednesbury, Staffs, 1879 to William and Catherine (nee Clark). Joined 14th (King's) Hussars c.1898. Fought in Boer War. Married Hilda Elliott at Aldershot, Hants 1904. Regiment to India 1906. John promoted Regimental Sergeant Major 1915 as Regiment went to fight in Mesopotamia and Persia, where he won Military Cross. Retired 1925, when became a publican in Weymouth, Dorset. Elected Mayor of Weymouth 1938, and subsequently re-elected every year until 1945. Almost killed 1941 when home bombed. Awarded O.B.E. for services during WW2.
