Major William R. Goddard was a member of the 15th Illinois (of Brig. Gen. Stephen A. Hurlbut's 4th Division, Col. James C. Veach's 2nd Brigade). He was killed at the Battle of Shiloh on the first day of fighting near the Pittsburg-Corinth Road. According to the The War of the Rebellion: A Compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies (Vol. 10, pt. 1, 226)he was heard saying, "stand firm; stand your ground... Take good aim." In 1861 he raised a company of men from Lena, Illinois and they were camped on the fairgrounds at Freeport before their service. Does anyone have information on Major Goddard? The 15th Illinois? His home? Where he was buried? |
