I haven't researched the Montgomerys, as I said in my earlier e-mail to you, although Jim Montgomery has. Have you written Jim again to see if he can tell you anything further back beyond George Montgomery (1817-1897)?
George's death record in Ontario is unfortunately one of the brief ones that didn't state his parents' names or birth place except "Ireland."
Deaths - Oxford County, Ontario - 1897
Division of Woodstock
Name: George Montgomery
Date of death: Oct. 26, 1897
Age: 80 yrs
Residence: 209 Light Street
Place of birth: Ireland
Cause of death & length of illness: General debility, 3 mos.
Name of physician in attendance: R. C. West
Religious denomination: Cong.
Name of person making return: James T. Bain
Date of registration: Oct. 27, 1897
George Montgomery and Hannah Hadden's 1844 marriage record at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Kingston might include his father's name. I only have the typed index entry that Jim Montgomery sent me.
Also a newspaper obituary of George's death might state his parents' names and more family details (George was a prominent resident of Woodstock and probably did have an obituary). I don't have any death notices on this family.
The OXFORD COUNTY GENEALOGICLAL SOCIETY may have records on the HADDENS and MONTGOMERYS, including obituaries. Their web site is very helpful:
I've been hoping to pay their research fee one day and ask for a records search on Archibald and Elizabeth Hadden, but haven't yet gotten to it on my long, long list; also two research trips to Ireland in the past two years have depleted my genealogy funds. I highly recommend that you request a search on George Montgomery from them. There might be treasures of information there. Did George have brothers and sisters who also came to Ontario? Their names, birth dates and birth places would be great to find, and would lead you to more on the Montgomery parents in Ireland.
Descendant Jim Montgomery listed George Montgomery's birth place as "Aughnacloy, Cavan Co., Ireland" but the 50th wedding anniversary newspaper article cited George's birth place this way: "Mr. Montgomery was born in the county of Caven, Ireland, and came to Canada when about twenty-five years of age."
Note that there is no town named "Aughnacloy" or any variation of it in Co. Cavan. Either George was born in County CAVAN, which is some distance south of Co. Tyrone, below counties Fermanagh and Monaghan; or he was born in Aughnacloy in County TYRONE (near his wife Hannah Hadden and her parents' home).
Once and if you can determine George's correct birth place, you can search the Tithe Applotments to see what Montgomerys were living in that location in the 1820s-1830s; one of the men listed as a tithe-payer may be his father, and the residences of all the Montgomerys at that time is a valuable clue for you. It's too broad an area to search all County Cavan without knowing at least a townland or village name.
Then I'd also check Presbyterian and Church of Ireland records in that Ireland location, once you identify it.
Let me know if you have any success, and I'll be glad to help you with anything else that I can.
