I am a descendant of a Bridget Harrigan, born in the Parish of Shandrum (vicinity of Newtownshandrum) on Oct 23, 1859. She is my great grandmother. She had at least two other siblings - John and Patrick (could also be Patricia). Her parents were Patrick and Margaret Harrigan (nee Lynch). My great grandmother, Bridget, married a John Reidy, also from the Parish of Shandrum area. Bridget and John Reidy proceeded to have quite a number of children, however, only three Reidy-Harrigans survived past their childhood years. My grandmother, Mary Reidy-Harrigan was born in Shandrum, Ireland in May 1882. It would appear that almost this entire group of Harrigans and Reidys left Shandrum for Montreal Quebec in the late 1800's. Mary Reidy-Harrigan married a Joseph Sylvester in Montreal in 1901. Their descendants are very numerous. Recently, I had the opportunity to visit Ireland. I made my way to Newtownshandrum and found the church, St. Joseph's, where many of the Harrigans were baptised and married. Unfortunately, the parish priest was visiting somewhere else the day I arrived so I could not ask to look at the church registers for information on the Harrigans and Reidys. I will follow up with the priest in the next day or so. If any of this information is of interest to other Harrigans or Reidys please reply. |
