I am trying to connect Houghtaling children who were living with my 4thGrGrandparents in the 1860 census to the proper branch of our family tree. They are not my direct ancestors, but I do believe they are distantly related. Would love to learn more.

1860 WI census; Monroe Co, Sheldon, listed as "Hela" (was really Heley) Stoddard, age 61 w/ wife Elizabeth, and three Houghtaling children; Sarah, Delos and Mary... not far away are Josiah and Elisa Houghtaling, also of Sheldon (two households from Vernon and Almira Sheldon, Heley and Elizabeth's daughter and her husband). By the 1870 census, those 3 Houghtaling children are living with (their parents?) Josiah (Ancestry here enumerates him as Joseph, but it looks like Josiah to me still) and Elisa A. Houghtaling, and numerous other siblings:

1870 WI, Monroe Co, Wellington, Household 97:

Josiah (or Joseph) 56 M W farmer New York
Elisa A 35 (this age just about has to be wrong... should be about 50) F W NY
Sarah 16 F W WI
Delos 14 M W WI
Mary 11 F W WI
(these were the 3 living with the Stoddards 10 years earlier)
Miranda 7 F W WI
Jane 5 F W WI
Rosa 3 F W WI
Hattie 7/12 F W WI

Two houses away from them is this Houghtaling family:

1870 WI, Monroe Co, Wellington, Household 95:

Henry 58 M W Farmer NY
Addie A. 55 F W NY (listed as Ada in the 1860 census)
Mary E. 15 F W WI
Francis 10 F W WI
William 19 M W WI

in the 1860 census this family also had:

1860 WI, Monroe Co, Sheldon:

(in addition to the family members listed above)
Isabel 7 WI
Nancy 11 WI
Sarah 15 NY
John 18 NY

in the 1870 census, again, also in Wellington, Monroe Co WI household 106:

John Houghtaling 29 M W WI (different stated POB)
Mary 28 F W IL
Charles 6 M W IL
Edward 3 M W WI

the IL and the WI vs NY have me confused but I think this is Henry's son John.

Ok, haven't really done "research" yet... all this is just from census records. But here's the thing... my Stoddards came from NY... they were married in Dutchess Co 1826, then were in Delaware Co by 1830 and Chenango Co by 1840... they were in Washington Co WI in 1850... they were all over around there, Jefferson Co, Dodge Co, etc.... before moving to Vernon and Monroe Counties by 1860!!!

In 1830 NY census; Delaware Co, Franklin Twp my Stoddards have two extra young girls in the family... I believe they are Betsey Bates Stoddards nieces, possibly daughters of her brother Terry Bates. I think her father and step mother had 2 other children from that family in the 1830 census, back in Dutchess Co. Point being, I think one was Elisa Bates, who I think may have met Josiah Houghtaling in either Delaware or Chenango Counties NY and married by the 1850's, wherever they were. So far can only find them in the 1860 and 1870 census tho. And yes, at this point all of the connections are speculation, but it does explain what happened to the members of the family that went missing... and why my 4xGrGrandparents would have had these kids living with them for a while. The name Delos came down in the Stoddard family as my 2xGrGrandfathers middle name, and there are Bates connections to the name Delos, as well.

Any thoughts? any connections? any questions?
