Terry, I was glad to find your message on the Jemison Forum. I have been wondering for a while what happened to the Ball family. My ancestor Robert Jemison Jr. of Tuscaloosa AL was Harriet Jemison's brother. I have copies of several letters between Robert and both Harriet and Dr. Doric S. Ball, as well as other letters that relate to the business affairs of Dr. Ball. He unfortunately lost his fortune by turning to cotton speculation in the 1840's in Mobile AL. The family moved to New Orleans, where he attended some course in medicine in order to reestablish himself in his former profession. In a letter of Dec. 20, 1869 to his nephew Robert Jemison Ball (Harriet and Doric's son) Robert Jemison wrote "My love & condolence to yr Mother & family for their recent heavy bereavement". I assume that that is in reference to the death of Doric Ball. Please let me know what you know of the family fortunes after they moved to New Orleans. |
