Good morning. We are attempting to trace the families of BALDWIN, CREEK, HILL and KNOWLTON. Stephen BALDWIN was born on 10-31-1821. We currently have no bio info on his parents or siblings, where they lived, were married, or were buried. Gianetta CREEK was born on 9-20-1824. Here too, we have no bio info on her family. According to the Early Marriages site at the IN GenWeb home page, a Stephen BALDWIN married a Jeanetta CREEK in Gibson County, IN, on 9-10-1842; which matches the family info that we have. We know they continued to live in IN until sometime after the Civil War. During this time, they had at least 8 children; but we know the name of only one - their 5th child - Henry Wilson BALDWIN, who was born on 1-1-1850. They eventually settled in Solomon, Dickinson County, KS. We have been told that Stephen and Gianetta opened and ran the Baldwin Hotel here. This would have been a going concern, since herds from many of the trail drives were held just outside of town until they had been sold and shipped. Stephen died on 4-10-1900 and Gianetta followed him on 9-23-1904. William Wyman HILL (4-24-1821) a native of Hartland, VT, married Elvira Harriet KNOWLTON (4-20-1822), also a native of VT, on 7-7-1843. Their youngest child was 9 years old when they moved to a homestead outside of Ada, Ottawa County, KS, in 1872. William W. died on 10-23-1896 and Elvira H. followed him on 1-13-1898. Mary (the 5th child out of 10) and her older brother Owen, homesteaded land that adjoined their parents land. Once the land had been "proved", she went to Solomon, Dickinson County, KS, and worked at the Baldwin Hotel. It is here where Mary Aramantha HILL met her future husband, Henry Wilson BALDWIN. Mary was 23 and Henry was 25 when they were married in 1875. They lived in Solomon, and continued to work at the Baldwin Hotel for several years, before they moved to Mary's homestead. There were 4 children born to this union: - Stephan, - Jennie, - Alice, and - Edna. Henry W. died on 10-24-1902 and Mary A. followed him on 2-11-1921. - Stephan married Julia _______? - Jennie married Dave IRELAND; - Alice married John McCULLICK; and - Edna married Foster BEICHLEY.
