Michael, The name was likely Janos Nagy (Nagy Janos, in its Magyar form). The Immigration and Naturalization Service would be logical place to begin. As a "56er", it doesn't seem reasonable that he and your mother would have been able to enter this country without being processed through one of the facilities established at that time to handle refugees. I was a university student then and can easily recall the efforts made by the government and Hungarian-American organizations (including and perhaps primarily the churches) to aid the refugees. There has to be a "paper trail" for you to find and follow. A thought: go to the Hungary Genealogy Forum of this site and address a question to "Laszlo". Laszlo was a "56er" and experienced the process. He is one whom I consider to be well equipped to provide some guidance for your search. Frank |
