My grandmother's maiden name was Patricia Mary Patey, born 17 March 1913 in Abertillery, Wales. Her parents held a pub in Abertillery called the White Lion. I've been given two explanations for the origins of the name Patey. The first, rather romantic, is that it derives from the name of the French village "Patay" near Orleans. The second, more plausible, is that is has Irish origins and it is in fact a bastard form of Padraigh, or Patrick. |
