I continue to search for ancestry of my Henry PELT who married Rhoda OLIVER in 1795 in Craven County, NC. Looking at what paper records (tax lists, census, marriage licenses, etc), I have possibly narrowed his family line down to one of two found in Pitt County, NC in the 1786 tax list and the 1790 Pitt County, NC Federal Census. But, I have not been able to find out anything about either of these families except the "head of household". I do believe my Henry's ancestry goes back to earlier VAN PELT family - some of which came down from New York to North Carolina and with time dropped the "Van" so the last name was PELT. I don't know anyone yet who has really sorted through the various early PELT/VAN PELT families in North Carolina, and that may never be done with the absence of paper trail.
