I continue to search for ancestry of my Henry PELT who married Rhoda OLIVER in 1795 in Craven County, NC. Looking at what paper records (tax lists, census, marriage licenses, etc), I have possibly narrowed his family line down to one of two found in Pitt County, NC in the 1786 tax list and the 1790 Pitt County, NC Federal Census. But, I have not been able to find out anything about either of these families except the "head of household". I do believe my Henry's ancestry goes back to earlier VAN PELT family - some of which came down from New York to North Carolina and with time dropped the "Van" so the last name was PELT.

I don't know anyone yet who has really sorted through the various early PELT/VAN PELT families in North Carolina, and that may never be done with the absence of paper trail. Below is some information that might be of help to some researching these family lines found in two publications regarding early North Carolina Tax Lists.
