Do any of the Poiles pronounce their name pwa-lay? My ancestors are Polleys and there is a strong tradition that the family was originally from France. I have traced the family back to the early 1800's in NY and I'm fairly confident they go back quite a bit further in the U.S. A family tradition says an ancestor changed his name back to the originaly spelling of (phonetic spelling here, no one seems to know how he spelled it) of Pollay or LaPollay. I believe there are towns in France called Poile and/or Poilly so I'm wondering if there is a connection. Any help or comments would be appreciated. Barbara |
