My mother-in-law was a Robarge from Chippewa Falls, WI. A book put together by some relative links the family to an interesting character (Pierre Roberge?) who bought land from the natives on an island in Rice Lake and later built a house on the shore of the lake. The story says he turned his house around to face the town that was eventually built nearby. He was said to have migrated to the area from Canada where he was a trapper. One year when he took his furs to town (Quebec?), he met and married a young, aristocratic French woman who was visiting friends in Quebec. Her family disowned her for marrying 'down'. The couple then moved to WI. I've seen on this forum that possibly some of his brothers also came to Rice Lake? I think they had 11 or 13 children.
If there are other descendants of this interesting family still living in western WI or eastern MN, we would be interested in communicating with them. We would love to verify some of the stories and hear more. We live in SE MN, although most of the immediate family is in the Milwaukee area.
