According to a Oct. 16, 1905 article in the Sioux City\IA Daily Tribune Erastus H. DARROW shot and killed his thirty year old daughter-in-law, Lillian MORRISON-DARROW in the back of a horse cab driven by Michael MCCANN at the intersection of 3rd & Jackson in Sioux City on their way to the NorthWestern Railroad Depot. This was around 4:40PM on Sunday Afternoon Oct. 15. The driver did not realize that Lillian had been shot till there was a second shot two minutes later in which Erastus used the 32 Calibur Revolver to shoot himself. On hearing the sound of the second shot and the shouts of a passerby, MCCANN looked into the back of the carriage thru its window and saw Lillian staring straight ahead with a blank look and Erastus beside her with blood trickling from his temple wound. With blood oozing from the carriage, MCCANN drove three blocks to the Sioux City Police Station to report the deaths. Erastus DARROW for years had been passionately in love with his son’s wife and he and she had been staying at the Arcade Hotel in Sioux City since Oct. 10 as man and wife while his son was in the Black Hills near Belle Fourche\SD. Lillian MORRISON had been boarding with the DARROWS in the Sioux Falls area working as a teacher prior to marrying W. E. DARROW. Her beauty had caught the eye of both father and son. Erastus may have been estranged with his wife over his infatuation with Lillian. Sioux City\IA police speculated that with only three dollars and change on both, Erastus saw a future of poverty and decided a double suicide was preferrable to life in poverty. A poem on him talked of dying in poverty preferrable to living in poverty. The Sioux City article indicated that Lillian may have had other romances as indicated in a note in her possesions from another man of Leadville\(?SD) which may have caused Erastus to become jealous – perhaps a man with more money. Other notes on Erastus indicated he had mining interests such as the ‘Hidden Spanish Mining Co.’. Those same notes also referred to his son-in-law, Walter DICK and cousin: Lemuel DARROW Attorney and Mayor of La Porte\IN. The Arcade Hotel Manager indicated that the couple had seemed happy when the couple departed the hotel in the carriage for the train depot although a pistol was found in Lilian’s luggage. Prudentia HEWETT-DARROW in 1930 was living in Los Angeles County, CA with Mac L. DICK(c1878- Probably son-in-law, Walter DICK). 1344-4-4-5-4-2-1-1 Willard ‘Willie’ Erastus DARROW 03JUN1871.WI-13JUL1940.Los.Angeles. Co\CA m Mary ‘Lillian’ MORRISON(c1875-1905.Sioux.City\IA) …Lilian Murdered by Father.In.Law: Erastus DARROW …Lillian was of Chapman\KS and buried Russell\Russell.Co\KS with a sister married to a John MCMILLAN of the Abilene\KS area. She had been a Sioux Falls\SD teacher. One must allow that Lillian may have had a child by Willard or Erastus and it was adopted out. Any and all additional info connected with DARROWS welcome including photos. Have been promised photos of Willard, Erastus and Lillian - hope to have in a month - will share. These DARROWS are distant-distant cousins of mine. Andrew BROWN @gmail.com habraun |
