Good morning. - I don't know if you live near this area but I found Cyrus STEVENS on an 1884 map living in section three of Riverside township. This is an easy location to find as it is the corner of highway 19 and 46 on a highway map. If you imagine yourself driving north on highway 19, when you come to the stop sign at highway 46 the land to your right would be section 3. - As you sit at the stop sign there are three bridges within walking distance. One will be behind you, one to the right and one directly ahead. The reason is because the Vermillion River meanders from the northwest, hits 75 foot high bluffs and is turned west, all in a thousand (+/-) feet. - This little corner of section 3 is too small to be planted and I cannot imagine anyone putting a house there as you would be blasted by winters northwest winds. If you climbed the bluff you will find that the land flattens out and that is probably where the family lived, somewhere in that mile. - The family was recorded in the 1870 Clay county census as "Stephen," and they were: last name - first name - house - family - age - sex - occupation - birthplace - notes - Stephen - Anna - 796 - 693 - 2 - F - x - Pennsylvania Stephen - Cyrus - 796 - 693 - 30 - M - Farm Laborer - New York Stephen - Hannah - 796 - 693 - 30 - F - Keeping House New York Stephen - John - 796 - 693 - 4 - M - At Home - New York Stephen - Mary - 796 - 693 - 7 - F - At Home - New York Stephen - Van Meter - 796 - 693 - 2/12 - M - x - Dakota Territory born in mar - A FamilySearch (http://www.familysearch.org/) individual record was found for Cyrus and it said: Cyrus G. Stevens birth: abt 1845 Riverside, Clay, Dakota Territory (now SD) Spouse: Harriet A. Fink birth: abt 1849 Riverside, Clay, Dakota Territory (now SD) - As the family lived closer to Centerville (2 miles) than Wakonda (5 miles), one would expect them to go there for their needs. And, if you type in Stevens on www.switchboard.com you will find 8 presently listed there. None are found in Wakonda. - There is likely more Stevens information in the Centerville centennial book, published 1983 but mine is on loan so cannot look it up. Maybe later.
