Hello, I am a historical collector and dealer in North Carolina. I recently came across a very interesting item. It is an original document related to the building of the giant Confederate monument in the square in Morganton, N.C. in Burke County. The document is 2 pages. The top of the document reads thus: NORTH CAROLINA - BURKE COUNTY - A.D. 1911 To The board of County Commissioners: The undersigned qualified voters of Burke County respectfully petition the Board of County Commissioners of Burke County in accordance with the provisions of Chap. 512 of the Public Laws of 1911 to subscribe and pay over to the Daughters of the Confederacy of Burke County, the sum of five hundred ($500.00 dollars each and every year for three years to be expended in part payment for the building of the Confederate Monument in the Public Square in the Town of Morganton upon the terms prescribed in said act. Below this paragraph are 37 signatures of people who promised the $500.00 for 3 years to build the monument. The names include B.G. Snipes. I have no other information other than what the document reveals about the people on the list. I would like to offer pictures of the document to descendants. I am also interested in learning more about the people on the document. Please e-mail me directly at softdsign@aol.com Thanks Joy Shivar JustaJoy Historical Treasures Huntersville, N.C. |
