Greetings All:

I've been trying very hard to learn the ancestry of my g-g-g-grandfather, Matthew STEVER. The earliest evidence I have of him is in Parke Co., IN, where he is married to Agnes BANKS, in the 1830 census. (I believe Agnes is the daughter of Samuel Banks of Stokes, NC, born about 1809. I believe Matthew was born between 1800-1810.)

STEVER is a hard surname to trace - it is so easily misspelled as Steven(s), Stiver(s), Steuer, Stirer, Steever, Steaver, Stiever, Stoever. I've looked for Matthew under all these surnames.

The name STOEVER appears in the Virginia "Germanna" colonies, as do many other names in my family tree. Those colonists generally moved to the Carolinas and to Kentucky after their period of service expired, so it might not be unreasonable to look for my Matthew there.

I checked the Stokes Co. census for any of the possible surnames, and found a couple "Stevens" and also Samuel STYERS. As I read entries on this board, I find that a lot of research has been done on Samuel Styers. Can anyone tell me if Samuel had a son, Matthew, who went west and settled in Parke Co., IN?

I am also searching for ancestry of Davis Stever, who I believe to be a brother of Matthew. Any information would be most helpful to me.

Sincerely,

Ceci
