I am researching the McCaig family. I found them in Humphreys county, then moving to Perry County and my line went on to Arkansas about 1847. My line is Samuel McCaig b. 1785 in Ireland who married Elizabeth Leslie/Lesley dau of John Leslie and Jane McElwee. My mystery and a big mixup it seems, is their son William B. McCaig who married Clara. He was born ca 1813, a year after Samuel and Elizabeth married in Humphreys Co. In the 1850 Conway Co AR census it lists William B. McCaig 38 tn and wife Clary 37 tn with daughters Martha 4 tn and Jane 2 ar. Also listed is Caroline 24 tn (sister????) HOWEVER, in the 1850 HENDERSON CO TN census is also a William B. McCag, 43 tn with wife Winney (Potter) 40 tn and their children Jacob B., Samuel, James S., Mary, Susan, Aaron R., Martha, Wm., Nancy, and all were b. tn. Also listed is Mary McCag 84 Tn...(mother of William B maybe??) I have noticed that several people have posted family trees on various sites listing the William B. McCag (wife Winney) as the son of my Samuel McCaig. I do not believe that to be correct. I know that Aaron Riley McCaig was a prominent citizen and was written about in a couple of books and is buried in Gibson County. Can anyone clear up his lineage for me? My dilemna is that my Samuel was married lst to a woman named Esther who had Jacob Samuel McCaig in 1805, then she died that year. He didn't marry Elizabeth until 1812. They had William B. in 1813 or so. This William is found in Arkansas in 1850 along with his sisters Jane and Mary and their husbands, his brother Nathan, and his mother Elizabeth. They all settled in the same area and went together to Arkansas from Perry County TN. I believe my Samuel came to America with brothers (William and Jacob, I think) and that they probably named their sons the same names, thus the mixup. Can anyone help me with this line????? |
