Looking for the parentage of V. S. Carter. I have written to the libraries of Bradley, McMinn, Monroe and Greene County, Tennessee trying to connect with someone who is researching the Epperson and/or Carter lines.
Bradley County because that was there last place of domicile before leaving for Crawford Co., MO in 1859. Also that is were Jesse Epperson and his wife passed away before the Carters left for MO.
McMinn County because that is where Maleta (EPPERSON) was living with her parents before her marriage to Valentine S.(evier) Carter.
Monroe County because that is where a majority of Jesse & Susanna (HARMON) Carter and children moved to between 1820/1829.
Greene County because that is where I think V.S. Carter was born. He names his second son, ALLEN Carter born 1839 in Murray Co., GA.
Living there in Greene County for many years was a Valentine Sevier, brother of Col. John Sevier first Governor of Tennessee. So V.S.'s parents named him after Valentine Sevier, sounds logical.
Allen Carter born 1791 in Greene County, married Elizabeth (TRIMM). Allen Carter's parents, John Carter II & Elizabeth (ALLEN) of Greene County also moved to Monroe County. John Carter II served in the command of Col. Richard Allen of Surry Co., NC during the 1780's when they lived in Surry Co., NC.
Consequently, I think, John Carter II named his son Allen which is the only non-bible name he gave to his sons in honor of his former commander of the American Revolution or his wife's maiden name. I think Allen Carter & Elizabeth (TRIMM) named one of their sons, Valentine Sevier Carter in honor of Valentine Sevier an old friend of Greenville, Greene Co., TN. And V.S. Carter named one of his children Allen after his father.
Now to the proof. No smoking gun yet. I am pursuing Allen & Elizabeth (TRIMM) Carter through the census records and ran across Allen & Charlotte (_____) Carter living in 1840 & 1850 Stewart Co., TN. This presents a problem because this Allen Carter was born in 1798 real close in age to Allen & Elizabeth (TRIMM) Carter's age.
Finding all the children of these families is a problem because of their ages. Most of the children in both families are married and gone by the 1850 census.
So I am listing all the Carter, Epperson & Trimm families in those counties through the 1830 to the 1850 census trying to locate a potential family for a 10 year old Valentine S. Carter in the 1830 census.
I also thought that maybe James Carter in the 1860 census of Crawford County, MO was a brother to Valentine, however, I am not so sure. Both were Preachers for the Methodist Episcopal Church South but James left Crawford and in the 1880 census he is in Texas Co., MO.
I thought that Marcus E. Carter who married Marena (CARTER) and is in the 1870 census next to James Carter in Crawford Co, MO may have been an older brother. But I dismissed that possibility because Marcus is too old and moved to another county in the 1880 census.
So my only other option is to make contact with someone who is a family historian for the Epperson family in McMinn, Monroe of Bradley Counties of Tennessee.
I know it's a long shot but at this point, Even I with my extensive resources find it troubling not to be able to identify Mary E. (CARTER)'s grandfather.
Another option is to find the descendants of the children of John W. & Mary E. (CARTER) Hansel's family from Marlow, Stephen's Co., OK and see if any of them knows about their grandmother's history.
I need to review the obits for Sullivan, Steelville and Bourbon, MO newspapers to find if someone wrote about Rev. V.S. Carter. Long shot.
Any information about these families would be appreciated. Tom Pratt
