Researching the following families in McNairy Co., TN. All have connections to Rockingham Co., NC. Email me if you would like to exchange info.

My ancestor is Nellie Atkins, wife of John Harris, Jr. of Rockingham Co., NC. About 1842, John Harris died and Nellie along with many of their children moved to McNairy Co., TN where many of the Atkins family relatives were living. This list of children is an on going project of mine as it isn't proven directly but rather through circumstantial evidence. Most were married in Rockingham Co., NC, some like Richard Browder was the sureity in my ggg grandparents wedding certificate. Nellie is found in the 1850 McNairy Co., TN Census living with her daughter, Martha Harris, wife of Abraham Young. Next door is Caleb Harris who we believe is a son. Several pages before them is Minerva Settle, wife of Claiborn Harris, my ancestors.

Read over my notes on each person listed and the evidence that I believe points to them being children of John and Nellie Atkins.

I live in Oxford, MS and plan on traveling to McNairy County next Monday to do some research on the Harris, Browder, Smith, and Young familes.

Have you ever done research at the courthouse there? Any pointers you can give me would be most appreciated.

Have you ever encountered any of these people listed in McNairy Co., TN?

Notes

John Harris Jr.

Probably died in Rockingham County North Carolina about 1841-42.

Ellender "Nellie" Atkins

1850 McNairy Co., Tennesse Census, Northern Dist, Page 137, December 20, 1850 Was living with her daughter, Martha Harris Young, wife of Abram Young.

Nancy Harris

Moved from Rockingham Co., North Carolina to McNairy Co., Tennessee about 1842. Nancy is NOT PROVEN to be a daughter of John and Nellie Atkins Harris but is strongly believed to be from circumstantial evidence.

1. Origins in Rockingham Co., NC

2. Followed migration of the Atkins family to McNairy Co., Tennessee

3. Named a child Caleb Harris Smith after her brother "Caleb Harris"

4. Named a daughter "Ellender".

5. Other family names: Martha, Mary E., and William

Mary Ann Harris

Mary Ann, who some online researchers originally listed her as a daughter of Leven Harris of Rockingham Co., North Carolina. However, this cannont be factual as the Polly Harris that was listed in the Will of Leven Harris cannot be the same person as Levin's daughter who was listed in his will of 1834 as Leven's daughter was married to Walter King.

Moved from Rockingham Co., North Carolina to McNairy Co., Tennessee about 1842. Mary Ann is NOT PROVEN to be a daughter of John and Nellie Atkins Harris but is strongly believed to be from circumstantial evidence.

Circumstantial Evidence that Mary Ann Harris is a daughter of John and Ellender Atkins Harris

1. Mary Ann Harris and Richard Browder were married in Rockingham Co., North Carolina

2. Richard Browder was the surety in the marriage license of Claborn Harris and Minvera Settle on 16 Feb, 1835 in Rockingham Co., NC

3. Mary Ann's DOB is within the range of the birthing years of Nellie Harris

4. Richard and Mary Ann Harris Browder moved to McNairy Co., Tennessee about 1842, the same time frame as the other Harris familes.

5. Given names of children, Martha, John, ... had grandchild named Liven (Possibly after Levin Harris, brother of John Harris, Sr.)

James W. Harris

James is NOT PROVEN to be a son of John and Nellie Atkins Harris but is strongly believed to be from circumstantial evidence.

1. He was married in Rockingham Co., Tennessee

2. Named a son Daniel which would have come from his grandfather, Daniel Atkins.

James undoubtly did not take part in the family migration to McNairy Co., TN. I believe that he died in Rockingham Co., North Carolina before 1850. I have not found him in any record other than his marriage to Emily in 1832. Some of his descendants have that he moved to Tennessee in 1847 and then to Cherokee Co., Texas by 1852.

A Y-DNA test of a direct male descendant would prove or disprove the parentage of John Harris, Jr.

Caleb Harris

There was a Caleb T. Harris living in Madison Co., Tennessee in 1830. Not sure if the same man.

1850 McNairy Co., Tennesse Census, Northern Dist, Page 137, December 20, 1850

Living next door to Abram Young and his mother, Ellender Harris in 1850 McNairy Co., Tennessee Census.

1860 Greene Co., Missouri, Page 67, June 26, 1860

Caleb is deceased by 1860 as Harriet is found living in Greene Co., Missouri

Calebs brothers, William and John were living with him in the 1850 McNairy Co., TN Census.

McNairy Co., TN, Deed Records D:333 26 May 1842 (sic - acknowledged on 27 May 1852) Caleb Harris & G. B. Babb to L. W. Smith, $250, 18 acres Civil Dist. 9, adjoining Joseph Donnell, Abram Young, David Carroll. --------- L.W. Smith was Lazariah W. Smith, son of William Smith Jr and Nancy Harris.

A Y-DNA test of a direct male descendant would prove or disprove the parentage of Caleb Harris.

Martha Harris

1850 McNairy Co., Tennessee Census, Northern Dist, Page 137, December 20, 1850

It is safe to assume with certainty that Martha is a proven child of John and Ellender Atkins based on the fact of her living with her mother in the 1850 Census. Abram is deceased by 1870 as she has remarried and living with James L. Britton.
