This may narrow things down a little. The 09/12/1918 World War I Draft Registration (image on Ancestry.com) for Little Rock city, Arkansas, shows him as born 03/31/1885, working as a Grocery Clerk, living with Bertha, and apparently with some sort of physical disability. Both the 1920 and 1930 censuses show him working in groceries. In 1930, when he was 45, he said that he had first married at age 32, or about 1917 or so. Do you have his death certificate?
