Helena,
I have been attempting to get back beyond Thomas Curtis(my great great grandfather) but am having little success to date. As you may be aware from previous correspondence, James Curtis (my great grandfather) is a younger brother of your husband's g grandfather. James emigrated to Australia in 1855, was successful in gold mining in Adelong (also my mother's birthplace) and is buried in the cemetery there. If you are interested I could pass on to you details of James's tree.

However I have been more successful elsewhere. As you stated, Ruth seems to be the daughter of James Challis and Mary Pratt. Mary Pratt (born 1762) is in turn the daughter of James Pratt and Margaret Gamgee who is in turn the daughter of Joseph Gamgee (born 1686) and Martha Hoy.
James Challis's antecedents are still providing some headaches for me.

Cameron Lyon
