This certainly looks plausible. The name Elliot repeats in my father-in-law's half-brother's family. Did one of the half-brothers (Almond or Elliot) die at or around Vicksburg? George, my father-in-law, does not know a great deal about his father's family as he lost him when he was six, but he has been very definite that an uncle died in the Union Army in the Civil War. Thank you very much for the information, it certainly matches in some other details. Did these Champneys settle in New England and then come west? I know many of my ancestors took the route from New England to New York and then on to the west. Possible distant cousins have mentioned their ancestors came from New England.
