There was a John Chanler (probably misspelled) in the Daviess County, Indiana census for 1860. I don't have Footnotes so I can't access it. He was born in 1853, so I think that he is your guy.

On Rootsweb, you will find that Nathan Chandler had three wives so it is possible that Nathan was John's grandfather. He lived for a time in Kentucky so it is possible that John's father was born in Kentucky and John just assumed it was in the Carolinas.

One of John's sons is named Alexander Nathan or Nathan Alexander, it is late and I forgot which. He was born in 1884.

The Chandler Family Association may be able to help you as they deal mainly with southerners. They are www.thecfa.org.

Back to my Yankee Chandlers.

Happy hunting!

Carol
