Looking for the parents of Armenia Charter, b. 1831, d. 1909. She was married to George Kyes in MI bef. 1850. See additional details below. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

James W. Vinson Jr.
San Jose, CA

FIRST GENERATION

1. ARMENIA CHARTER was born about Feb 1831 in NY.1 On the Death Certificate of George and Armenia's son, Eugene, Eugene's wife Carrie listed Armenia's place of birth as Ohio. This fact differs with Census Records that indicate place of birth as Michigan. Census records for 1850 and 1860 list her place of birth as NY. According to the 1900 Census Record, Armenia's mother and father were both from Canada. She appeared on the U.S. Federal Census Record on 25 Jul 1860 in FREDONIA TWP., CALHOUN CO., MI.2 She appeared on the U.S. Federal Census Record on 13 Aug 1870 in CHARLEVOIX TWP., CHARLEVOIX CO., MI.3 Armenia is listed as age 39, Keeping House and living in the household with her husband George Kyes, and their daughter, Dora age 4. She appeared on the U.S. Federal Census Record in 1880 in BOYNE VALLEY TWP., CHARLEVOIX CO., MI.3 "Armena", age 49, born in MI, is listed as a housewife living with husband George Kyes, and their adopted daughter, Latie, age 14. Her father's place of birth is listed as "SCO" and her mother's place of birth as "NY". She died in 1909 in BOYNE FALLS, CHARLEVOIX CO., MI.4 She was buried in Boyne Valley (or Boyne Falls) Cemetery, BOYNE FALLS, CHARLEVOIX CO., MI.4,5 In Oct. 1996 Jim, Bess and George Vinson visited the Boyne Valley Cemetery in Boyne Falls, and found the gravestone for Armenia Kyes which showed the years of her birth and death. They also found a grave for "MEDORA" Kyes. On the card in the office it said "George Keyes", as did our cemetery deed. In pen was added "or John Papineau". There were several graves for Papineaus. It is questioned that perhaps "Papineaus" was Armenia Kyes' maiden name, or perhaps George had sold the plot.

She was married to GEORGE KYES (son of ELIJAH G. KYES and SALLY ( )) before 1850 in MI.5 GEORGE KYES was born about Apr 1825 in NY.1,6,7 According to the 1900 Census Record, George's father was from Scotland, and his mother was from Wales. This is a stretch. Other records show parents born in CT. and NY. He appeared on the U.S. Federal Census Record on 31 Oct 1850 in FREDONIA TWP., CALHOUN CO., MI.7 George "Keyes", a Farmer, age 24, is listed as head of household, with his wife, "Armina", age 18, and their son, Eugene, age 3 months. They are listed next to the household of Samuel Keyes, age 33, (believed to be George's brother) and wife Harriet. Listed next to Samuel's household is the household of Elisha Keyes, age 57, born in NY, and wife Sally, age 51, born in NY, (believed to be George and Samuel's parents). He appeared on the U.S. Federal Census Record on 25 Jul 1860 in FREDONIA TWP., CALHOUN CO., MI.2 George, age 34, and his wife, Armenia, age 28, are listed in the household of George's father, Elijah, age 67. George's mother, Sally, is not listed and presumed to have died prior to 1860. He was a Retail Grocery in 1870 in CHARLEVOIX, CHARLEVOIX CO., MI.8 He appeared on the U.S. Federal Census Record on 13 Aug 1870 in CHARLEVOIX TWP., CHARLEVOIX CO., MI.8 George, age 45, a Retail Grocer born in Penn., with real property valued at $1400 and personal property valued at $500, is listed as head of household with his wife, Armenia, age 39, and their daughter, Dora, age 4. He owned Cemetery Plot in 1873 in Charlevoix Cemetery, CHARLEVOIX, CHARLEVOIX CO., MI.9 A cemetery deed shows George "Keys" paid $2.50 for Lot No. two Block No. two in Charlevoix Cemetery. It is dated February 21, 1873, the supposed death date of his 5 year old daughter, Medora. He appeared on the U.S. Federal Census Record in 1880 in BOYNE VALLEY TWP., CHARLEVOIX CO., MI.3 George, age 55, a Farmer, is listed as head of household with his wife, "Armena", age 49, and their adopted daughter, Latie, age 14. George's birthplace is listed as NY, (which differs from the 1870 Census that lists his place of birth as PA). The birthplace for both of George's parents is listed as "CT". He was a Farmer in 1900 in BOYNE FALLS, CHARLEVOIX CO., MI.1 He died in 1905 in BOYNE FALLS, CHARLEVOIX CO., MI.5 He was buried in Boyne Valley (or Boyne Falls) Cemetery, BOYNE FALLS, CHARLEVOIX CO., MI.5,9 In Oct. 1996, Jim Vinson and wife, Bess Byers-Vinson (2nd great granddaughter of George Kyes), and Jim's brother, George Vinson, visited the Boyne Valley Cemetery in Boyne Falls, and found the gravestones of George and Armenia Kyes. There was also a large stone in front of the two smaller ones which was marked KYES. ARMENIA CHARTER and GEORGE KYES had the following children:

       +2       i.       EUGENE KYES.
3       ii.       MEDORA "DORA" KYES was born on 17 Apr 1866 in CHARLEVOIX, CHARLEVOIX CO., MI.10,11 She died on 23 Dec 1871 in CHARLEVOIX, CHARLEVOIX CO., MI.10,11 Medora is listed in the State of Michigan Genealogical Death Index under the name of "Dora" (Ledger Page: 111, Record Number: 33, Date of record: 30 Sep 1872). The record lists her cause of death as SCARLET FEVER, and lists her mother's first name as "Azmen". She was buried in Charlevoix Cemetery, CHARLEVOIX, CHARLEVOIX CO., MI.5 In Oct 1996, Jim, Bess and George Vinson found a cemetery deed from Charlevoix Cemetery dated February 1873 for "Lot No. Two, block No. Two". They went to the cemetery and found a gravestone for "Medora", first child of George and Armenia Kyes, aged 5 years, 8 mo. & 6 days. The deed says "George Keys"; however, the stone definitely says "Kyes". The card in the office also said "George Keys" (typed). In pen was written "or John Papeneau". They found a number of gravestones for "Papeneau". The question remains, however, that if Medora died in 1871, why the time lapse in purchase of the cemetery plot in 1873?
4       iii.       LATIE KYES was born about 1866 in CANADA.3 She was adopted before 1880 in MI.3 She appeared on the U.S. Federal Census Record in 1880 in BOYNE VALLEY TWP., CHARLEVOIX CO., MI.3 Latie, age 14, is listed as "adopted daughter" in the household of her adoptive parents, George Kyes and "Armena".
