Joe I was very interested in your information on Isaac Chatham who's mother was a Maxwell. I have a GGGrandmother who was Phoebe (Phebee) Toliver and her mother was a Maxwell. Phoebe married John Adam Payne in Illinois. John must have died at a young age. Phoebe may have married a Thomas Crabtree and lived in LeRoy Townshop, Coffey Co., Kansas. She may have died there. In 1858 Isaac Chatham with Thomas Crabtree became guardians of Phoebe's children, Lucinda, Mahala, Martha Susan, James T, Elizabeth and Mary.In the 1860 census of LeRoy, Kansas Isaac Chatham is listed as living in the home of Thomas Crabtree with Martha Susan,Elizabeth, a Nichola Payne (?) and a Charles O. Crabtree 10 yrs. In a Kansas census of 1865 Isaac is still in the home of Thomas Crabtree in LeRoy. Thomas has a young wife, his son C.O. and a baby son Frank 1 yr. Isaac is listed as a cousin-in-law by marriage on another census.
I am wondering if you know any thing about the Maxwells or this Isaac. Isaac is listed as a Gunsmith. I do not know when Isaac died. Thomas Crabtree was born in 1820 and died in 1901. Thomas helped to found the town of LeRoy in 1856 and lived there until his death. In the early days of Kansas he was a trader among the Indians. Isaac Chatham was born 1818-19. I do know Martha Susan Payne was living with an Aunt Martha Maxwell Elson in Unionville, Putnam Co., Missouri when she married William Horace (Hod) Harvey. Sept 1871. I wish I knew what happened to all the children.
