I found a new "play toy" two days ago -- Footnote.com -- and have done little else since. I'm slowly going through all my files to see what I might find. One big set of record images they have are papers from NARA such as Revolutionary War record and pension files. While these are far from complete, I am finding a lot.
When I got to the Childress name, I ran across the pension records for Martha Childress in North Carolina, widow of William, but Martha, too, had died before her pension was finally approved so her surviving children shared the payment. Consequently, they are named, and one document has William and Martha's date of marriage and lists all their children with the date of birth of each (but the details for the last two children aren't in the image).
After recording all the names and dates, I searched obvious Internet sites and discovered that not a single descendant of William and Martha appear to be working on their family history, so I'm sharing here the information I found at Footnote.com and from the 1850 census hoping that someone can benefit from it.
