George Smith, KY, Union, Pension

I am having trouble figuring out how to find more information, and hopefully his pension files on my Gg grandfather, George Smith, if even possible with little information on him.
I only have a 1978 family letter that says he fought on the Union side, was probably from Adair Co., (possibly Columbia) KY, lost his leg, came home with a wooden leg and received a pension. Born in KY.
The earliest census that i have is for his son, George Washington Smith, !870 census, age 20, in Gradyville, on Lucy Butler's farm, as he married her daughter, Martha, that year. (It says he was born in Texas, but that is incorrect, born in IL,) both parents born in KY. Some of the son's later census say he was born in 1848. I have been unable to find an earlier census woith father and son. I am using the son's age to guess his father's age--the civil war George.
With such a common name, no age, wife's name, regiment number, etc, I am lost.
Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.
