It would say Medical Discharge, or just discharge so this may not be him but not to sound disrespectful towards your family, but sometimes Family stories get "added on to". For all we know just because some said it happened doesn't mean it did. In my family it was said an ancestor of mine Served in the Union Army, was in Shermans March to the Sea, and was a Sargeant. He was a Yank and was in Shermans March to the Sea but he was not a Sargeant. This of course doesn't mean anything George Smith could have very well lost a leg during the war. Have you found him in any later census record's? Some of them would list rather he was disabled and such.
