No offense taken, I have found many mistakes or wrong information throughout my searching. The letter was so detailed, even giving names of Ggg grandparents coming to KY from Va. in covered wagons, and has been my main source of finding family on the census, including Ggg grandfather William T. Butler, and son James Butler, of Adair Co. KY, who served Confederate side. The lady who wrote the letter was raised by William T.'s daughter Martha and her husband, George W. Smith, son of old George from Civil War. Martha would not allow pictures of Abe Lincoln in the house, because her family were Confederate. Said old George "walked on a a peg stick" , leg being shot off in the Civil War, and received pension.
Since I have been able to follow up every lead in the letter except old George, maybe you are right, a mistake somewhere. I did not find him in the 1890 veterans census, nor any other earlier census. No way of knowing if the right George unless both father and son together. But your tip about the disability being marked on the census was good, as I had not thought of that. Only found the son on 1870 census.
Is there any way, to find the name along with the disability incurred?
Also, in the information you gave me on the soldier George who mustered in as a Sergeant, I wonder if you could tell me how he started with rank rather than private? Does that mean he served in the previous war?
Thank you so much for helping me. I am the last generation of my family and trying to get as much information as possible.
