Well there are several ways you could rank in the Civil War.

1. If your family was high in society rather rich or just politial they could get you a commission depending on the people they knew at the time.

2. You served in the Mexican War, I have heard stories about these men getting more bounty and rank at times for the experience.

3. Was in the Army or Militia at the time.

4. Was voted to that position by members of his company, this was most likeily because he was a Sergeant and not a Officer. The next step for him if he had ever been promoted would have been to officer status.


I am going to look for this to because this is begining to get interesting. But i shall look at census records as best as possible. Did that letter so anything of George's family even if there were no names maybe where they lived or were from?
