To answer the other part of your question: The G.A.R. (Grand Army of the Republic) was a veterans organization that was formed after the war. It had posts (local groups) all over the country. Many of those posts were named after a famous general or other leader, or some other well-respected person, perhaps a local man. Large numbers of Union veterans joined this organization, and attended meetings both locally and nationally as long as they were able.
