Service records usually contain little if any personal information about a soldier, other than his age, physical description, and residence. In the case of PVT H. F. J. MILLS, Co. F, 33d AL Infantry, a parole document signed at Montgomery, AL on 14 Jun 1865, describes him as 5'5" tall, light hair, blue eyes, and fair complexion.
Pension records are generally a better source of family information. Confederate pensions were granted and administered by the former Confederate states, based on the veteran's post-war residence, rather than the state from which he served. Thus, if HFJM remained in AL after the war, you can check with the Alabama Dept. of Archives and History to see if he collected a pension, but if he moved elsewhere, you would have to check with that state.
Hope this helps.
