For the most part, Civil War Army ranks were as follows:
Private
Corporal
Sergeant
Orderly or 1st Sergeant
Sergeant Major
2d Lieutenant
1st Lieutenant
Captain
Major
Lieutenant Colonel
Colonel
Brigadier General
Major General
Lieutenant General
General
