The Confederate States government adopted a few different flag designs during its 4+ year existence. The following Wikipedia article pretty well summarizes them. As mentioned previously, what is generally known as the Confederate battle flag, the one that most people would associate with the Confederacy, was not the Confederate national flag. There were different versions even of that. A quick look at the First National Flag, "The Stars and Bars", will tell you why, on a battlefield, it could be confused with the US flag, "The Stars and Stripes." That confusion led to the adoption, in the field, of the battle flag.
