Wrong age on enlistment papers?

Is there a chance of a soldiers age being wrong on his enlistment papers and those that list his name thereafter?

Could it start with just one paper listing the age incorrectly and then that age being transferred to others?

I've got an ancestor who, from every other record I have would have been 24 years of age at enlistment. On his papers, he's shown as age 44. I can find no one else, from the same county, with the same name, so I'm sure he's the correct man.

The age thing has me baffled, though.
