Help identify a regiment

Any experts comment/help with the following:

James O'Neil bought a family plot at Calvary Cemetery NY 23 June 1862.
The first burial was the next day - 24 June 1862 for his son John O'Neil age 19 (no inscription and no death record at NYC's vital records so died elsewhere and body shipped back).

Family records say that John died in the Civil War for a NY Regiment but I don't know which one. I can only speculate that this would have been one raised in NY City as that is where he lived.

I have used the following:

Civil War Soldiers database
Ancestry.com - various indexes to service records and pensions.
NARA

Does anyone know if there is an easy way of filtering out all John O'Neil's (all spellings of O'Neil too) who enlisted or were mustered out after the June 1862 burial date as whichever index I search through throws up too many hits for NY regiments. I've ordered a few records from NARA (died month or two before) but these proved inconclusive - no address or family ties to match with and I can't afford to order every possibility. I don't want to leave this in the hands of a clerk at NARA who may or may not return the request because there were too many John O'Neil's or don't look at the fact they must have died before June 1862, etc, etc.
