My grandfather told a newspaper reporter that his father, J. A. Hawkins, fought first for the Rebels (being "drafted") then fought for the Union. His father was born around 1834 and lived in Eastern Kentucky after the Civil War but had lived across the border in Virginia before the war and in nearby North Carolina as a child. I don't know when the move from Virginia to Kentucky was made. Any suggestions for how to go about hunting for his records in the Union and the Confederate Armies?
