Kay --

The best approach would be to locate a pension application for this man. A pension application will provide a statement of U.S. service, which we don't have.

The other approach concerns his county of residence in 1860, which you should locate. Unless one of the county boundaries is formed by another state, he should be enrolled in a military unit from the county and state of residence.

We don't the man's first name, so that limits your ability to search. None of the Hawkins using the initials J. A. who enrolled in Virginia units fit the description you gave. These were James A. Hawkins, 2nd Co. "H", 59th Virginia Regt.; James A. Hawkins, 2nd Co. "C", 46th Virginia Regt.; J. A. Hawkins, Co. "F", 18th Virginia Regt. The last named was a conscript assigned from Camp Lee, residence Lunenburg County VA. All three served through the war.

John A. Hawkins served in Co. "E", Thomas (NC) Legion, enrolling in Wayne County NC, Mar. 1, 1863. He was court martialed a year later, but it's not clear that he deserted.
