I found this interesting in reference to the Civil War Medal of Gold in a Signal Corps article.

Referencing a pension claim..."Lane in no sense swept across the pages of history - obviously. Rather, like most of his fellow soldiers in th CIvil War (or his counterparts in any war), he was swwept into the dustbil of history. Yet he performed his duty as best he could and thereby served his country. He had only one moent of glory in all of his life. Foar that he was rewarded with a promised gold medal, which turned out to be the Medal of Honor."

Again a reference to Medal of Gold earned supposedly for capturing an enemy flag or some such herioc feat.
