Most probably he was initially buried on the battlefield. All bodies that could be identified were later buried in marked graves at Poplar Grove National Cemetery near Petersburg. He is not listed there, so it is quite possible that his original battlefield grave was not marked, or the original marking had disappeared or was unreadable. In that case, he would have been buried at Poplar Grove as an unknown.
