John M. Curl of Daviess County,Indiana enlisted on 10-8-61 as a private in the Indiana 6th Infantry, Co.E. He was listed as a POW on 10-27-63 at Brown's Ferry, TN. The date and method of his discharge not given. Source; "Report of the Adjutant-General of the State of Indiana".

The same date, one other from the IN 6th was killed, and two others taken prisoner. Both died at Andersonville Prison. (surprising their records are complete, but not Curl's).

The skirmish at Brown's Ferry was the successful attempt by General Grant in breaking the siege of Chattanooga, where union troops were holed up.
