In 1774, in Westmoreland County, Pennsyvlania, in the valley of Loyalhanna Creek (sometimes written Loyalhannon), some early settlers (probably having settled after 1763, when the French-Indian War was wrappping up), signed a letter/petition to the Governor of Pennsylvania. One John Cochran singed at or near the home of John Shield/Shields, which was likely about 5 miles from present-day Hannastown, and probably near present-day New Alexandria, Pennsylvania. Other signers included the following:
John Shields, John Nodler, William Moore, James Moore, John Mcintire, David Henan, Henry Heathly, Manuel Gallahan, Isaac Parr, Jas. Parr, Samuel Parr, Arthur Denniston, Archibald Trimble, John Denniston, Lorance Irwin, John Moore, Isaac Youngsee, Daniel Mcmaname, Patrick Butler, Daniel Mcbride, James Bain, John Thompson, James Wills, Andrew Wills, Robert Bell, William Bell, Alexander Mcclain, Charles Mcclain, Andrew Mcclain, Thomas Burbridge, William Brant, Samuel Craig, John Craig, Alexander Craig, James Burns, John Cochran, David Shields, Thomas Freeman, Barnabas Brant, Edward Brant, James Bently, Jacob Round, John Moore, William Barns, William Cooper, William Hamilton, James Hall, David Loramer, John Loramer, Alexander Barr, James Thompson, James Kelly.
I am estimating that these men were all over the age of 18, some possibly as old as 60, and so this John Cochran might have been born between 1714 and 1756. My own guess is that he was between 22 and 42, and so likely born between 1732-1752. Because his name is Scottish (and likely Scotch-Irish), my guess is that he might have been born in Pennsylvania or might have arrived from Ulster (Northern Ireland) as a child.
I am seeking contact with anyone who might be researching this John Cochran and his (extended) family. Please write me directly at duaneaboggs@hotmail.com if we can help each other.
