Are you aware of the genelogies that Lorris Cockerham is publishing on this family? He has the Cockerham line going back to England. It seems to me he is guessing as to which of two brothers might be the father of John, it's been awhile since I looked at this. His volume II has some misinformation as the wives of Ivy Cockerham son of Thomas. But other than that I think his info is pretty good, he has been researching for years and years.
