You'll notice that the name Abner does show up here, although the guy in my excerpt is a generation too young to match your needs. Yes, your Abner would fit the family of the William born about 1682. This William and his father Joseph were in King William and King & Queen counties. The other Cockerham families that were in Virginia that early apparently were either in old Lunenburg County or in the vicinity of Jamestown. Both these groups of Cockerhams lived for a while in Halifax County 1700-1775 before moving into North Carolina in Wilkes and Surry counties and then on to South Carolina, Mississippi and across to Texas, etc. I'll send my file on the earlier Cockerhams for your use. Any corrections additions or suggestions you might have will be greatly appreciated. It's also possible your Abner was an immigrant. There simply aren't many records on these folks prior to 1700.
