Cockerham Family Genealogy Forum

Good morning Lisa. I've been looking around for your Daniel Cosby Cockerham and finally found this message with his birth date of 1921. I have a file which has considerable information on the two Cockerham families which moved somewhat at the same time in mass from Lunenburg County, Virginia into Surry and Wilkes counties in North Carolina in the late 1700s. I do not believe these two lines are related until at least before 1700 if even then. But for your problem, it doesn't matter right now. I believe you need to do some basic genealogy to tie Daniel Cosby to one of these families. Have you tried looking at his death certificate (usually parents are listed), maybe a will or court record. He and Betty should have a marriage license that will likely show some of their parents? On the 1930 census for Surry County, Daniel should show up as 9 years old. Probably aren't more than 20 or 30 Cockerham families there at that time. If you can get back another generation or so, then you should be able to tie into one of these lines. I don't recognize the name from my Wilkes County Cockerhams who were all related to Humphrey Cockerham 1745-1835. I believe as Sonya has suggested that he is more likely related to the other folks around Low Gap in the northern part of Surry. I'll be happy to share my file at any time, but he's not there quite yet. Best of luck with your search, let us know if we can help. Are you close to a library or archive or the internet where you can check those census records? The Surry County clerk of court in Dodson should be able to help with the other records.
