Teresa - I am not sure if we are talking about the same William Cockerham, but my gggrandfather was William Cockerham. He was born about 1815 in NC, the son of Moses V. Cockerham, Jr. and his wife Martha (?). William owned a mill in Surry Co. He inherited it and it was shut down during the Civil War. He went to ware and came back, but he had been shot in the leg and it had to be amputated. He died between 1893 and 1899 in Surry Co., NC and is buire din the Cockerham Family Cemetery on the old Willliam Cockerham homeplace. William married Nancy Lowe, daughter of Samuel Lowe and Sally Hayes about 1836 - 37. They had the following children: Andrew "Andy" Archer Cockerham (my ggrandfather) b. August, 1837 m. Eliza Hawks first, Sarah Brannock, second and Betty Moore third. Andy died July 14, 1910 and is buried in the family Cemetery; Hardin Cockerham b. 1839 d. 1863 during the Civil War - unmarried; Samuel Cockerham b. April, 1840 m. Margaret Rutha Smith 1873, d. 1927, buried in family cemtery; Sarah b. 1843 m. William E. Burcham on June 13, 1867 in Alleghany Co., NC; Jackson b. 1846 m. Mary Jane Lowe 1970 d. 1893, buried in Kirby Lowe Cemetery; Celia "Cely" b. 1848 m. J. M. Holder Jan. 13, 1870 d. May 23, 1908 b. Antioch Bapt. Church Cem; Wiley b. Oct. 1852 m. Belegory "Belsey" Smith Jan 9, 1873 d. Dec. 24, 1932 b. in Roundpeak, NC; Elizabeth b. 1854 m. James Smith d. May 30, 1932;
Lemuel Thomas b. April 24, 1858 m. Mildred E. Flippin first, on August 23, 1879 Almeda Ramey second on Nov. 23, 1893 d. Dec. 1, 1900 b. Cockerham Family Cemetery at Roundpeak.
Moses V. Cockerham, Jr. was born about 1770 in Lunenburg Co., VA d. 1855-1860 in Surry Co., NC and is buried in the Cockerham Family Cem. His wife was Martha and their children were: Ann/Nancy b. 1801 m. Martin Payne d. cir. 1890 b. Flat Top Primitive Bapt. Chur Cem; Sarah b. 1804 m. John Payne Dec 15, 1832; Hugh b. 8-8, 1806 m. Nancy Fulks Dec 19, 1831 d. May 23, 1885 b. Traphill, NC; Tabitha b. 1-11-1808 m. Edward Creed, d. 1867 b. Low Gap, NC; Joseph b. 1809 in Wilkes Co., NC m. Elizabeth Isom Poole; Mary b. 1810 Wilkes Co m. Thomas S. Fulks Dec. 19, 1832 in Wilkes Co; may have died in VA as she is buried in Crooked Creek Prim. Bapt. Church Cem in Carroll Co., VA; William b. 1815 m. Nancy Lowe; James Adam b. 1816 in Surry Co m. Nancy Carolina Holder about 1844.

Moses V.Cockerham, Sr. was born before 1837 in Lunenburg Co., VA and died Feb., 1817 in Surry Co., NC. M. Elizabeth Elliott. They had the following children that I know about: Moses V. Cockerham, Jr. b. 1770; James b. 1782 in Surry Co., NC d. prior to 1816 m. Elizabeth (?); Susanna b. 1784 in Surry Co m. Jarot Auberry. I am sure there are other children which I have not been able to document. Moses migrated to Surry Co in 1771 with his brother, William, and his nephew David. In 1780 he receive a land grant from the State for land on Little Fisher River, east of Roundpeak Mountain. During the next 20-15 years he appears on many deeds. It appears that buying and selling land was his occupation. He is said to have had 7 childredn, but only 3 can be documented at this time. At his deth, he left his grist mill to his son, Moses, Jr. until his grandson, William Anderson, became of age.
I have a lot of information on this family as this was my mother's family. Hope some of this will help. If this is not your William, then you have a lot of information that won't help you. Betty Pilson
